February 2009

Welcome to the Month of February! - did my stretches.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 43 and 73 degrees, light winds, humidity around 27 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Monday: Sunny, with a high near 68. North northwest wind between 6 and 8 mph. Monday Night: Clear, with a low around 42. West northwest wind between 3 and 7 mph.”
Did some chores around the house and worked on my sister Shiela’s computer. Then I was off to Lee and Marcie Hines’ home to watch the Super Bowl. What a game! I was rooting for Arizona but the Steelers were an awesome team to watch. That 100-yard return by Steelers Linebacker James Harrison was a Super Bowl record. As me and Lee watched the game, Marcie kept feeding us. With all the excitement going on I was absentmindedly stuffing my face and I swear if I ate anymore I’d explode. The game was close right down to the last 15 seconds! Even though my team lost, I think that this was the best Super Bowl I have ever watched.
Got back home and to chill out I watched “Sahara” (2005) starring Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz. I have seen this film last year but this is one of my favorites; I’ve read all of the “Dirk Pitt” adventure novels by Clive Cussler throughout the years, always eagerly awaiting the next to be published.
Did my stretches and practiced my guitar. Wrote my column for the newspaper and sent it in. Wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Monday 02 - did my stretches and ran two miles.
Late last night I tried to renew the three library books online but the website denied my request because I had already renewed them once already and they are due today, dang! So this morning I called up the library to ask if I could get them to do this for me. I told them I have to drive thirty miles round trip to return the books and have only two chapters left to read on one of them. She said that she would give me a few days more on the one book. I asked her about the other two, and she said that I would have to bring those back today or there would be a fine. Well that would defeat the whole purpose, I said, that I’d have to make two trips into town. Fine, I’ll just bring the three books back in and I’ll then checkout the one I haven’t finished while I am there. No, she said, I would have to wait twenty-four hours to do that! God, they’re really strict down there at the Joshua Tree library!
I decided to just return the books and while I was doing that I’ll send my sister’s laptop I’m giving her. So I got that all boxed up and drove down to Joshua Tree, sent the laptop, and returned the books. While I was at the library, I came upon a couple of Clive Cussler “Dirk Pitt” novels I may not or may not have read. I thought that I read them all, but maybe not. I checked them out, and will read them at my leisure and see if I have already read them. I think my mind is failing me!
Stopped off at Stoney’s on the way back to help him finish off that pecan pie! Then I went on my evening walk and yakked at my brother for a while when I got back.
Watched “24” on Fox, did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Tuesday 03 - did my stretches, ran a mile, rode my bike, and lifted weights.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 42 and 70 degrees, calm winds, humidity around 25 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 72. West wind at 10 mph becoming east northeast. Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46. Light wind becoming west between 12 and 15 mph. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph.”
Finally got started boxing up all my 2008 receipts and correspondences and put them away in storage. I’ve been procrastinating to long and needed to get it done before 2010!
A nice lady, Sandra Smith, from Joshua Tree who reads my column wants to donate a propane stove to our community’s thrift room. She has it tied in the back of her truck and would like to unload it. After calling Marcie all day, I finally got a hold of her and told her to call the lady to make arrangements for her to deliver it.
Stoney called to invite me over for a turkey sandwich. I told him I’d be over after I did my evening walk. He only had enough bread for three sandwiches if I didn’t mind eating the heels and I told him that would be fine and more than enough for us. After he made the sandwiches he found a new loaf on top of the fridge, but I ate the heels anyways.
Started reading “Atlantis Found” by Clive Cussler only to find that I read it before. I think that I’ll read it again.
I watched “Nova: The Spy Factory” on PBS about the failings of the intelligent agencies during 911. Then I watched “Fringe” on Fox about a virus that turns people into giant hedgehogs. I still think that the Mad Scientist makes the show work.
Did my stretches and lifted weights, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Wednesday 04 - did my stretches and ran two miles.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 46 and 69 degrees, calm winds, humidity around 24 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. East wind 5 to 8 mph becoming southwest between 15 and 18 mph. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 41. West southwest wind between 15 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph.”
I started to mess with the HP Pavilion desktop that Raymond had given me last week. It has an Intel Celeron 433 MHz processor, 128Megs of Ram-64Meg in two slots, and a floppy drive. I installed an old 8Gig hard drive and CD drive I had lying around. I loaded up Win98 on it and booted it up without any problems. I’ll have to find a modem and a few drivers for it and then it will be good to go.
Worked outside moving the hot water solar panels out of the way so I can dig a ditch to lay pipe from the water main to the house. I think it will be cool to have water running in the kitchen!
Talked to Sandra Smith about the stove she donated. She got in touch with Marcie and took the stove over to the community center last night. Now I won’t need to help do that today then. Sandra likes to hike and maybe we can get together someday and go for one!
Went for my evening walk and listened to an astronomy lecture “Molecules in Space” that I heard before.
When I got back, Joe the FedEx guy drove up to deliver a compact speaker system for my iPod. He said that FedEx is as busy as ever but the company is cutting back on a lot of bonuses and retirement matching of the employees. I guess their company is going into survival mode, like so many companies are.
My sister Shiela called to say that the IBM laptop I sent to her has arrived. I hope she gets a lot of use out of it as I had.
Did a little webwork and planning of Robert’s website that I’m designing. Then I read a few chapters in “Atlantis Found” by Clive Cussler.
Did my stretches, practiced guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Thursday 05 - did my stretches; too dang windy for a jogging!
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 41 and 63 degrees, SSW winds 9 to 17 MPH with gusts up to 38, humidity around 59 percent, altostratus clouds moving in. According to the National Weather Service “Friday: A slight chance of showers before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. South wind between 6 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Friday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Southwest wind between 6 and 11 mph.”
I mostly stayed in the house doing this and that and other stuff. I messed around with the computers, and did some cleaning of the living room throwing away old papers and magazines. I searched the web for a background water drop gif for Robert’s website and found a nice one. I’ll put that all together tonight.
My five gallon propane tank for my heater ran out and I replaced it with a full one. I can heat my bedroom with just the pilot light going so I don’t really use all that much propane, maybe a tank and a half (about 7 gallons) for the whole winter.
It was still windy later in the day so I went inside my camper for a change of scenery. I fell asleep and was awoken by a call from Bob Vandenberg who said it was raining down where he lives in Temecula. I got out of the camper while I talked to him and noticed a big bank of clouds moving in from the west. Lots of lenticular clouds off to the east had blown in ahead of the storm, cool!
It was too windy for a walk so I started reading “Atlantis Found” and didn’t stop till late into the night, but I did stop long enough to watch the news and yak at my brother Kevin for a spell.
Did my stretches, practiced my guitar, and worked on Robert’s website for a while. Wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Friday 06 - did my stretches, ran a mile, and lifted weights.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 41 and 57 degrees, SSE winds 7 to 19 MPH, humidity around 60 percent, altostratus clouds all through the day but no rain. According to the National Weather Service “Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 52. South southwest wind between 6 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10pm, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.”
Joan called having a problem with her email and I walked her through it.
Robert wanted me to call him about the website I’m building for him. It seems he was talking to “friends and now wants to make more changes and make it more involved than what he first wanted. We’ll see where this goes. I told him that what I’ve done so far was a test to see if that’s what he wanted and that I didn’t do any formatting of the text yet. He mentioned that the websites borders were not centered and to the left. I found that I had missed a percentage sign in the table HTML and fixed it.
Called Verizon to get call forwarding and to take off blocking my name and phone number when I call someone. I kept having to dial *82 to get through to some folks. Now they’ll know whose calling. Anyways I will have my calls forwarded to my cell when I’m online so folks can get a hold of me.
Went for my evening walk, not a long one because of the wind and the chance for rain. I took some pics of the clouds and the sunbeams shinning through them.
Read a few chapters of “Alanis Found” and then watched “Numb3rs” on CBS about the theft of tennis shoes. Hell I didn’t know they are a collector’s item and a black market for them.
Did my stretches and practiced my guitar. Updated the Copper Mountain Mesa Website and sent out the newsletter. Wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, did some work on Robert’s website, and called it a night.

Saturday 07 - did my stretches.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 35 and 56 degrees, SE winds 6 to 10 MPH, humidity around 71 percent, stratus clouds and rain. According to the National Weather Service “Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph becoming southwest. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Sunday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37. West southwest wind between 8 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.”
It must have rained sometime between when I went to sleep at 4am and when I awoke at 10am. Most of the day it was overcast with a few drizzles here and there. I would have gone for a run but the trail was muddy and the clouds threatening to rain. I mostly stayed inside doing webwork and a little sorting of bills and such. I called a few Family members to yak at them.
I went over to Stoney’s for dinner with him and Roger Smith. Stoney made this bean and rice dish that was mighty good, and he also baked two apple pies that we happily ate one of. I took a shower and washed my clothes while I was there. We sat around watching a poker tournament on TV. It was hard for me to follow because I don’t play the game and had to ask “who won that hand” once in a while.
Got home a little after 7pm and Fat Cat was waiting at the front gate to be fed. Once I got him satisfied with a big bowl of cat food I settled down to read a few chapters of “Atlantis Found” until late into the night.
I did my stretches and lifted weights, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, worked a little on Robert’s website, and called it a night.

Sunday 08 - did my stretches.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 36 and 54 degrees, SSW winds 7 to 18 MPH with gusts exceeding 30, humidity around 63 percent, stratus clouds and a few drops of rain. According to the National Weather Service “Monday: A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Breezy, with a west wind between 20 and 26 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Monday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. Breezy, with a west northwest wind between 14 and 22 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph.”
Joan called and came by with her payment for the dialup service and now she is paid up through October. She needed help carrying a new microwave to her house from her van and disposing of the old one. I told her no problem and we drove over to her house so that I could take care of it.
It was cold and breezy and I elected to stay in the house doing odds and ends of this and that and other things that needed to be done.
Last night I download the beta for Foxmarks for Internet Explorer that promptly wiped out my bookmarks in Firefox. Foxmarks stores your bookmarks on their server and you can have them synced to other computers you use. I have been using it for years on Firefox with only one glitch a year ago when I or the program messed up. So I had to go to another laptop that hadn’t been synced yet, uninstall Foxmarks before it synced the bad file, download Foxmarks, install it, and set it up to upload the bookmarks from the laptop and remove the ones on the server. Then I uninstalled the beta for IE. Now everything is back to normal.
Ray’s brother Orville called wanting me to come over to put his cell phone on a monthly plan. I needed to return Ray’s computer anyways and decided to swing by there before I went to Stoney’s for dinner. I told Ray that his computer is to dang old and not worth the hassle of fixing and that he should invest in a newer one. I may have that HP Pavilion 4563z that George gave me ready in a few days and I can let him use it until he decides what to do. Maybe that will be enough for him and I’ll sell it for a few bucks. Then I helped Orville with the monthly plan. The Virgin Mobile service rep was a very harsh woman, very impatient as I talked to her over the noise of barking dogs and Orville’s cigarette smoke that filled the tiny trailer where Orville lives. It also smelled like someone’s five day deodorant ran out a few days ago (might have been the old dog that likes to nip at your ankles). Not a very pleasant situation, but honestly these are mighty fine folks and I didn’t mind helping them out. I left smelling like an ashtray of old smelly stale butts.
I went over to Stoney’s, and he, Roger Smith, and I, finished off the beans and rice dish that Stoney made yesterday. We also had some apple pie and ice cream.
Talked with my brother Kevin for a spell, and then watched “60 Minutes” on CBS about the interview with the flight crew of the airliner that landed in the Hudson River. They are heroes, each and every one of them!
I read a few more chapters in “Atlantis Found” until it got late. Then I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, and wrote to my journal. Started writing my column for the newspaper, and called it a night.

Monday 09 - did my stretches. Usually I run two miles on Monday’s but it’s raining outside and couldn’t do much of anything else.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 33 and 40 degrees, SSW winds 20 to 24 MPH with gusts exceeding 40, humidity around 61 percent, stratus clouds with rain. According to the National Weather Service “Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Northwest wind between 9 and 16 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 34. West southwest wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm.”
Okay it’s raining outside and I am stuck in the house with Fat Cat. I decided to sort through my bills, surf the web, and read “Atlantis Found” throughout the day.
Called Stoney and he told me that they had a little snow early this morning at the community center during the USDA Food Distribution.
My friend Terry now living in Virginia call to chat for a spell (96 minutes). She is attending her Mom who is recovering from a staph infection that put her in the hospital for a while. The way Terry tells it, that staph infection is a nasty bug to get!
Stepped outside to see if I could see the Lunar eclipse but it was overcast with lots of cold wind, dang! It was going to be only a penumbral lunar eclipse, but dang all the same! As soon as the clouds clear in the next couple of days I’ll be outside looking for Comet Lulin which is in the constellation Libra right now, and I can’t wait to see that!
I kept reading until “24” came on Fox where Jack has rescued the President’s husband from the evil doers. Then I went back to reading.
Did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Tuesday 10 - did my stretches. It’s still cold and windy. I really hope that tomorrow turns out to be pleasant so I can run my two miles.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 31 and 40 degrees, NW-SW winds 8 to 12 MPM, humidity around 41 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 58. Calm wind becoming south between 7 and 10 mph. Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming northwest.”
I’m running low on yogurt and other essential items to maintain my excellent mental and physical state (yeah right!), so I hopped into the old Gross Polluter and headed down to Yucca Valley. On the way I stopped off at my mailbox to collect my mail. Then I went on to WalMart and Stater Bros to do my shopping. Nothing really out of the ordinary happen except that there were lots of folks there; the parking lot was full, and the shopping isles were packed with carts filled with food being pushed by hurried folks. Usually this only happens at the beginning of the month when disability checks and food stamps come out, and I avoid those days. I can only guess that this is the first day of good weather we had for a while and folks took advantage of that to shop (like I did). I don’t like crowds!
Stopped off at Stoney’s on my way back to bring him some salsa that I brought for tacos he’s going to make for dinner one night this week.
I called my brother Kevin and jawed with him until the news came on, and found that the Stock Market fell 381 points, yikes!
I read a few chapters of “Atlantis Found” until “NCIS” came on CBS, and then watched “Fringe” on Fox.
I was going to go outside to search for Comet Lulin but I forgot that the Moon is just a day past full and has washed out the dark skies.
Did my stretches and practiced my guitar. I called Andrew up to talk about web design and to see how he and Stefanie were doing. Then I wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Wednesday 11 - did my stretches and ran my two miles. When I began my run, the water in the cement pond was frozen over.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 30 and 53 degrees, W-S winds 3 to 9 MPM, humidity around 40 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. Northwest wind between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 36. West wind between 6 and 8 mph.”
I just got done eating breakfast when Stoney called reminding me of his call yesterday that he needs a long telephone cord and an two outlet adapter to connect it to his satellite box or they’d start charging him. I said that I’d see if I could find them. I had forgotten all about yesterday’s call! So I hunted all around, and finding what he needed, I drove on over and helped him set it all up. Afterwards we had apple pie and ice cream! We sat around and jawed for a spell while “The Birds” (1963) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, and Suzanne Pleshette, played in the background.
I went for my evening walk and then feeling the warmth of the Sun’s heat on my back on an otherwise cold day, sat outside on my bench for an hour with Fat Cat.
When the Sun set I started a fire in the woodstove and got on my laptop to do some webwork well into the night. Andrew called and I decided to quit and yap at him. Then I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night. Last night I had a dream that I was in a city somewhere and everyone was getting evicted from their homes. A crew would arrive to remove all their belongings and the police were dragging women and their crying children from the houses and onto the streets. One lady screamed for my help, and I tried, but found that I couldn’t move. All I could do was watch as their homes were plundered by the work crews. That dream really sucked!

Thursday 12 - did my stretches and lifted weights.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 33 and 52 degrees, NW winds 9 to 18 MPM, humidity around 45 percent, a few altostratus clouds swept by . According to the National Weather Service “Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 54. Breezy, with a light wind becoming southwest between 20 and 23 mph. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 21 to 24 mph decreasing to between 11 and 14 mph. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph.”
The wind was blowing really strong and there was quite a chill outside, so again I mostly stayed inside. There is talk about a winter storm blowing in around Friday night and I thought it best to prepare for it by collecting firewood and filling up all my water bottles. I did clean the kitchen and got that looking spic and span. Called a few friends, finished reading “Atlantis Found”, and that pretty much was the whole day.
I went for my evening walk but kept it short because of the cold wind. I started another Clive Cussler book called “Valhalla Rising”. Even a few chapters into the book I still don’t know if I have read this one before. “Atlantis Found” I did read before but it was worth reading again. Ah, getting old and forgetting!
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Friday 13 - did my stretches and rode my bike. When I started my run there wasn’t any wind and then it started to really blow less than half way into the run. It just couldn’t wait another half hour to blow!
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 36 and 48 degrees, SW winds 4 to 24 MPM, humidity around 50 percent, altostratus clouds but no rain. According to the National Weather Service “Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. West wind at 8 mph becoming north. Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 34. West southwest wind between 5 and 8 mph.”
Cold and windy again! I messed around inside until it was time to go over to Stoney’s for tacos. While I was there I took a hot shower and it felt mighty good. Roger Smith was over and brought a fresh carrot and apple drink that he made in a juicer to share with us.
Too windy for an evening walk so I just read a few chapters in “Valhalla Rising” until “Terminator: The Sara Conner Chronicles” came on Fox. Then an hour after that I watched “Numb3rs” on CBS about an arms dealer who tampered with the jury that was hearing his case for killing his girlfriend in a FBI sting.
Did My stretches and practiced my guitar. Then updated the Copper Mountain Mesa Website and sent out the Newsletter. Wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Valentines Day - did my stretches and lifted weights. Nice day, no wind or clouds, but not very warm.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 31 and 55 degrees, calm winds, humidity around 46 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. Calm wind becoming south southeast between 13 and 16 mph. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 36. Southwest wind between 7 and 10 mph becoming calm.”
I worked trying to setup my HP laser printer to my MacBook but found that the install CD didn’t have Mac software, dang! So I setup another printer of mine, an Hp all in one inkjet. All worked well except the paper feed that took five sheets at a time and jammed up. The scanner worked perfectly, but I couldn’t print anything, double dang! I’ll try to fix that some other time.
I did a few other knick-knacks around the house, called a few Friends and Family. Got in a silly argument with Dale from Landers; he’s as stubborn as I! I’ll call him up in a few days to make amends.
I went for my evening walk and forgot to take a new astronomy lecture that I had downloaded last night. When I got back I just settled into reading “Valhalla Rising”, I don’t think I’ve read it yet! It still doesn’t sound familiar after reading over two hundred pages. Well I guess it really doesn’t matter anyways if I read it or not because I am enjoying it.
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Sunday 15 - did my stretches.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 31 and 53 degrees, winds SE 2-8 MPH, humidity around 55 percent, altocumulus clouds. According to the National Weather Service “Presidents' Day: Rain likely, mainly after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54. Breezy, with a south southwest wind 10 to 13 mph increasing to between 21 and 24 mph. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Monday Night: A chance of rain before 6pm, then a chance of showers, mainly before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. South southwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming west northwest. Chance of precipitation is 40%.”
Seimi stopped by for a chat. I was on the computer doing some writing when he banged on the door. He wanted to see an article I wrote about him last month, so I brought it up on the computer to let him read it. He was the only person I saw today. Some days I won’t see anyone. It can get kind of lonely out here!
I really got into reading my Clive Cussler novels lately. It’s kind of nice to, when the weather is bad, just kick back and lose one’s self in an adventure book, and that’s what I’ve been doing for the last two weeks. Plus it helps take my mind off all the bad news that’s coming out of Washington and Wall Street lately. It’s funny that someone who has ripped folks off for $56 Billion dollars is under “house arrest”, and someone who shoplifts a loaf of bread ends up in jail! Tell me there isn’t a double standard between the rich and poor and I’ll laugh in your face!
I called Stoney to say howdy. He told me that he had heard from Chris Jonas that Bill Morrison had passed away in his sleep last week. I was sorry to hear this. Bill was a friendly sort and helped out at the community center setting up the microphones, distributing gifts to needy kids when we used to have the Toys for Tots during Christmas, and doing other behind the scene work that made our little community center function. Bill will be dearly missed!
I watched “60 Minutes” on CBS. They were discussing the “Buy American” clause in the bailout. I can understand the reasoning for folks who want this added to the bailout, but I also remember what brought on the Great Depression in the 1930s, too. Back then, after Wall Street took a nose dive and to make a bad situation worse, America added high tariffs to imported products from other countries to protect American jobs, and these other countries followed suit and did the same to our products. Well what followed was a domino effect: nobody was selling anything to anyone else. And this protectionism put a lot of people out of work worldwide, thus bringing on the Great Depression. No, I guess we haven’t learned our lessons from history! Here we go again!
Continued reading well into the night, then I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Monday 16 - the weather was lousy with dark clouds, high winds, and drizzle, so I just did my stretches.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 36 and 52 degrees, winds SSE 9-25 MPH with gusts up to 40, humidity around 59 percent, stratus clouds with drizzle. According to the National Weather Service “Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Light wind becoming west between 13 and 16 mph. Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 36. West wind between 7 and 11 mph.”
I called Marie Morrison to offer my condolences and to ask if it would be okay to write about Bill in my news column, she said that would be fine. I asked her a few questions about Bill’s life. They will hold services for him on Wednesday at 2pm at the Joshua Tree memorial park.
Well I’m kind of stuck inside today with the weather outside cold windy and damp. Did some webwork, update the BIOS on my Dell Mini 9 to version A4, then continued to read “Valhalla Rising” by Clive Cussler that I hope to finish tonight.
My brother Kevin called and we jawed for a spell until the start of the evening news. Then read till “24” came on Fox where Jack is still trying to save the world from evil doers. Then I went back to reading late into the night and finished “Valhalla Rising” and I found that I haven’t read this one yet, or at least I don’t remember reading it! I may go to the library on Wednesday to pick up the last Dirk Pitt novel by Clive Cussler to read and also get “Genetics Demystified” that I still have two chapters to finish.
Did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, and posted it to the web. I’ll begin writing my column for the newspaper getting it ready to send to the newspaper tomorrow, and call it a night.

Tuesday 17 - did my stretches, ran two miles, lifted weights, and rode my bike. A little cold, but no wind, and the Sun is out!
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 34 and 54 degrees, winds W 6-10 MPH, humidity around 47 percent, altocumulus clouds flying by. According to the National Weather Service “Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 57. North wind around 7 mph. Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 39. Northwest wind between 3 and 7 mph.”
I made my breakfast drink for the next couple of days; two oranges, two apples, a few carrots, cut everything up skins and all and throw them in a blender on high. It makes enough for three days. I usually add aloe vera from my plants outside but the cold has gotten to them and I’ll have to wait until spring for them to recover.
I worked on my column for the newspaper and tweaked it some, and then I sent it to them. Did a little webwork updating a few things then I got off the dang computer; I spend too much time online!
I called Dale from Landers to yak at him for a spell. He lives about ten or twelve miles away and we’re thinking of hooking up CB radios between our two places for communication. I think that would be neat! He started building a small shed to hold batteries for the solar panels he will be installing soon. As I was talking to him I climbed up onto the roof to see if I had line of sight to his home for the CB radios. There is a big hill in the way so I guess I’ll have to hang my antenna high.
Went on over to Stoney’s for a hot shower and have dinner with him and Roger Smith. Roger said he is going to write another article for his column on gardening on my website. I told him he should write something on how to start a razed box garden for beginners because folks are wanting to learn to grow their own food in these hard times we’re in. He said that it would be a good idea because he is planning to build one soon. So he’ll take some pictures of it and write up step by step instructions for building one.
Stoney talked about the time when he rode hogs as a kid in a rodeo. He said it was harder than he thought to stay on the hog as their skins were slick and you’d slide off and land sitting on your butt in the mud.
I got home as the Sun went down so I didn’t go for my evening walk. I did read and got caught up on my astronomy reading.
I watched “NCIS” on CBS about; someone trying to frame Dinozzo for a hotel murder. Then “Frontline: Inside the Meltdown” came on KCET. It told about the home mortgage bubble burst and the meltdown that quickly followed of financial institutions that held toxic mortgages, and what the Federal Reserve and Congress tried to do to save our economy from total collapse. It was a very interesting show to watch!
Did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Wednesday 18 - did my stretches and ran a miles. Still a little wind and cold on my run but not bad at all
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 36 and 58 degrees, light breeze out of the NNW, humidity around 40 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 63. Northwest wind between 5 and 7 mph. Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 39. Calm wind becoming west northwest between 4 and 7 mph.”
I got everything together for my trip to town; library books, birthday card for my sister Lynn, and dressed up for Bill Morrison’s memorial and headed out in the Gross Polluter.
I stopped off at Velaro gas station to fill up on gas. I went inside to pay and I noticed that there were girls running around with Subway t-shirts on, and I looked around to see that a Subway Sandwich counter was stuck in the back of the store. It’s been there for the last six months I was told, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it.
Got to the library with little time to waste before the memorial was to start at 2pm and picked up “Genetics Demystified” written by Edward Willett that I still needed to read the last two chapters before I had to return it the last time. And two books by Clive Cussler: “Trojan Odyssey” and “Black Wind”, two of Clive’s books I believe I haven’t read before, cool! Then I was off to the memorial.
When I arrived at the Joshua Tree Memorial Park I found Steve Tuttle and his mother Ruth sitting in their car waiting for folks to arrive. We chatted for a spell and decided to wait inside. Folks started to arrive and were greeted at the door by Chaplain Grover Fletcher and Karen who works for the Park. We all got seated and the Chaplin gave a nice eulogy for Bill. Then he asked if any of us would like to make any comments. Mary Kobalt gave an elegant talk of when she first met Bill and Marie when they first moved into our little community. Bill used to help her and her family out, having Thanksgiving dinner at the Morrison’s, how dogs would always end up at Morrison’s home, and how Bill was young at heart. Mary Helen Tuttle Reminisced about their good friendship and the plants that the Morrison’s gave her have grown. Seimi Shiba spoke of Bill’s helping at the USDA food distribution, and I mentioned the Toys for Tots we used to have at the Community center and how Bill’s face would light up giving away toys to the needy kids in our area. Bill’s daughter Darcy McCarthy told us all how her father loved to dance and taught her the Jitterbug. It was a small but loving group of folks that showed up and I think Bill would have liked that!
Since I was a good boy today I stopped off at that Subway Sandwich Shop that I discovered earlier and got me one of those $5 foot long sandwiches. I ate half for lunch when I got home and the other half later on for supper.
I went for my evening walk listening to an astronomy lecture on “Homogeneity” which has to do with the Cosmological Principle, and how the universe is both Isotropic and Homogeneous. Isotropy is the uniformity of the universe in all directions that we look. Homogeneous is the composition of matter spread out in a very large area, is the same everywhere; the larger the area you view the more Homogeneous it becomes, the smaller the area you view the less Homogeneous it is (this is a tough one to understand). Okay, let’s try this: If you spill a pound of salt thinly and evenly on a large floor and you look at it very closely you would see the individual grains, but if you stand at a distance all you will see is a white flat surface. The Cosmological Principle is what scientists use in their mathematical models of the universe and the beginnings of the Big Bang.
I did some webwork and began reading “Trojan Odyssey” until late in the evening. Then I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Thursday 19 - did my stretches, ran two miles, lifted weights, and rode my bike.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 38 and 62 degrees, light breeze, humidity around 35 percent, clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Friday: Sunny, with a high near 66. North northwest wind around 9 mph. Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 41. Northwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.”
It was a nice day outside, so I sat in my patio and took the scraps of paper that I’ve written folks phone numbers on and inputted them into my PDA. I sorted through some bills and other mail while enjoying the sunshine outside.
I went over to Stoney’s for an early lunch. We finished off the stew he made two days ago and we both had a slice of apple pie with a scoop of ice cream.
I went for my evening walk re-listening to the astronomy lecture “Homogeneity”. There was one part that was of interest to me when they talked about after the Big Bang, how was it that matter was able to “talk” to each other so that matter would be the same everywhere. They said this was due to Cosmic Inflation, but they also said that there are other theories, one being that light could travel faster early on in the Big Bang; I’ll have to read up on this because it kind of goes along on my thinking about Black Holes shrinking, where matter is squeezed to a point that it loses space time and that exotic particles can exceed the speed of light and escape from a singularity. (Of course this is my imagination exceeding the limits of my knowledge)
Went in my camper and fell asleep (I must have been dog-tired).
I read “Trojan Odyssey” throughout the night only stopping to go outside with my binoculars to see if I could spot comet Lulin which should be three degrees from the star Spica in Virgo. At 10pm Spica was too low in the east. I tried again at 1am but I couldn’t find the comet. I’ll use the telescope tomorrow night and get a star chart from the internet that has its position on it.
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Friday 20 - did my stretches and ran a mile.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 40 and 64 degrees, light breeze, humidity around 28 percent, high cirrus clouds. According to the National Weather Service “Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. West northwest wind between 4 and 7 mph becoming calm. Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. Calm wind becoming west northwest around 6 mph.”
It was so nice outside that I decided to do a little gardening; watered all the plants, dug around the palm trees for irrigation, and added fertilizer.
My Dell Axim X-30 PDA hasn’t been able to connect to my laptop and I thought it was broke. My earlier model Dell X-5 PDA works just fine. But before I threw the X-30 away I checked to see if there was an update for Microsoft Activesync for it. I’ve been using ver. 3.5 and there was a 4.5 update. I downloaded it, installed it, and now the X-30 runs just fine, cool!
I went for my evening walk re-listening to the astronomy lecture on “Homogeneity” again. After my walk I went inside my camper and read a chapter of “Genetics Demystified” and amazingly answered all the questions at the end of the chapter right! Only got one chapter left to read and then I’m done.
I watched “Terminator: The Sara Conner Chronicles” on Fox. Then I read “Trojan Odyssey” until it got late. I had setup my telescope earlier in the day to look for comet Lulin tonight, so I just walked outside, pointed the scope where the comet should be by the chart I downloaded last night, and I believe that I finally found it, or a nebula; it was very faint. I’ll have to check again these next few nights to see if it has moved. The sky was very clear and the stars sharp, and now that the weather is getting better I’ll be spending more of my time with my telescope.
Did my stretches and lifted weights, and practiced my guitar. Then I updated the Copper Mountain Mesa Website and sent out the Newsletter. Wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night

Saturday 21 - did my stretches, ran a mile, lifted weights, and rode my bike.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 42 and 61 degrees, light breeze, humidity around 30 percent, high cirrus clouds again. According to the National Weather Service “Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming southwest between 13 and 16 mph. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. West southwest wind between 6 and 14 mph.”
I’m a little tired because I stayed up after 5am this morning so that I could go outside and get a better view of the comet Lulin, but that was not to be! The dang cirrus clouds came in and cover the night sky making it impossible to see but the brightest stars, dang! So I’m going to write this post quickly and go to bed.
I mostly talked to Friends and Family throughout today after I did a little webwork. When I went on my evening walk, I took the cell phone and yakked to my Brother Kevin along the way.
I spent most of the evening doing webwork and updating some things on my website that needed a doing over.
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, and called it a night.

Sunday 22 - it’s Sunday so I only did my stretches.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 42 and 63 degrees, light breeze, humidity around 37 percent, altostratus clouds bringing a bit of drizzle. According to the National Weather Service “Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 70. Northwest wind between 6 and 10 mph. Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 47. West northwest wind between 5 and 9 mph.”
It was a cloudy drizzly day and I didn’t feel like doing much anyways, so I just stayed inside puttering around the house doing this and that and other stuff that needed to be done. After awhile went and hid out in the camper and did a little reading of “Trojan Odyssey”.
While I was hiding in my camper, my Dell Mini 9 was doing an update. I’m still on dialup and didn’t want to tie up the line so I had all my calls forwarded to my cell phone. My friends could call and reach me. I think I’ll make this a standard procedure for now on. Unlike my landline phone, the cell phone has caller ID that I can use to screen calls: If it’s someone I want to talk to I’ll answer it. If it’s someone I don’t know it goes to message and I’ll call them back later. Works good for me!
I was starting on my evening walk when it started to sprinkle and decided not to go for my walk and went in the house to make pancakes and eggs for dinner instead. I’ve been feeling kind of down these last two days and I thought that some comfort food would help cheer me up; it did a little.
I feel that I need to get involved in something new, something different that I haven’t done before, but I don’t know what that may be yet and have to contemplate on finding it; I feel the urge to learn! Tomorrow I’ll go for a two mile run, weather permitting, and that should get me feeling better.
I turned on the TV to see what was on “60 Minutes” but there wasn’t anything I was interested in so I went back to my reading.
It’s overcast tonight so there won’t be any stargazing or finding comet Lulin. So I kept reading until it had gotten late and then I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Monday 23 - did my stretches and ran two miles.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 46 and 70 degrees, light breeze, humidity around 37 percent, altostratus clouds bringing a bit of drizzle. According to the National Weather Service “Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Calm wind becoming south between 4 and 7 mph. Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 46. West wind between 6 and 11 mph.”
P called asking my help on uninstalling Yahoo Messenger 7.1 that doesn’t work on Win98SE. I walked her through it and told her that I’d send her a link tonight for Yahoo Messenger 5.5 that’s supposed to work on 98SE.
I was outside filling my water jugs when I noticed that it was starting to sprinkle! Funny that there wasn’t any clouds overhead, there were clouds but way off to the sides, so there must have been a lot of turbulence up higher in the atmosphere. I looked around for a rainbow but didn’t find one.
Fired up my old desktop computer that has Suse Linux 10 that runs my astronomy program Kstars so I could get a good idea where comet Lulin would be tonight. Lulin will be about three degrees to the SW of Saturn that will be in Leo. I’ll check it out tonight at 10pm when it’ll be high up in the sky.
Went for my evening walk and listened to a new astronomy lecture on the “Age of the Universe”, which it turns out to be around 13.7 billion years old.
I went on over to Stoney’s to take a shower and eat some of the beans and rice concoction he cooked today. He got the recipe from the back of a bag of beans we get from the USDA food distribution. It was mighty good the last time he cooked it and was even better this time. Roger Smith was also there and we sat all around jawing for a long spell; mostly about the community center, folks that we know, and the meltdown of the economy: the DOW fell 250.89 points today.
I watched the sad state of affairs that our economy is in on the evening news. Then I read a few chapters in “Trojan Odyssey” until “24” came on Fox where Jack is still out trying to save the world.
Grabbed my binoculars and headed outside to see if I could find comet Lulin. First I found Saturn and then there Lulin was just to the southeast of Saturn about three degrees away! I took out the telescope for a closer look, but the binoculars did a better job of it. Mostly all I could see was a fuzz ball with what seemed to be the faint tail that extended to the east. Seimi called asking where about the comet and I directed him to it without any problems.
I did my stretches and lifted weights, wrote to my journal, and posted it to the web. Started doing my column for the newspaper and will send it in before I call it a night.

Tuesday 24 - did my stretches, ran a mile, lifted weights, and rode my bike.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 45 and 72 degrees, light breeze, humidity around 33 percent, mostly clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Northwest wind between 7 and 9 mph. Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 44. West northwest wind 17 to 20 mph decreasing to between 9 and 12 mph. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.”
I went into my trailer to read “Genetics Demystified” by Edward Willett, and finished the last chapter and did the quiz at the end. I learned much but I’m still mystified! The best part of the book was the chapter on viruses; made me want to find a book on viruses and study those little buggers.
P called me throughout the day needing help downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger 5.5. I think we finally got it running. If not I’ll hear from her tomorrow.
I did a backup, clean and defrag on my Toshiba laptop. Then I loaded Kubuntu 6.1 as a dual boot, which is Ubuntu Linux with the KDE GUI that I like. I did all this to run an astronomy program called Kstars, but after I got it all loaded up it didn’t have Kstars, dang! I’ll see if I can find Kstars online and download it later tonight. I can never get the dialup modem to work on Linux, so I’ll download it while I’m on Win XP and then transfer it over to Linux. I really liked Linux when I had a WIFI broadband connection, but have stopped using it because of the dialup setup problem. It’s been sometime since I checked to see if Linux has resolved some of the modem driver issues, so I might have a look see tonight.
Went for my evening walk and listened to a new astronomy lecture on the Higgs Bosons which is believed to be the particle that gives matter mass.
I watched the President’s speech tonight and really don’t know what to think about it; I’ve heard all this political rhetoric before from past Presidents (they usually say what you want to hear). But as they say “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”, so we’ll have to wait to see the results. I wish him luck!
I watched “NCIS” on CBS about a colleague of Abby’s get shot to death just after he mailed an envelope to her containing a painting made with radioactive paint. Afterwards I read a few chapters in “Trojan Odyssey”. Then I did my stretches, practiced guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Wednesday 25 - did my stretches and ran a mile.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 44 and 67 degrees, W-NW winds at 8 to 12 MPH with gusts around 34, humidity around 34 percent, mostly clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 18 mph increasing to between 23 and 26 mph. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 46. West northwest wind between 8 and 16 mph.”
Bob Ascherin called up and came by with a book on rock climbing in Joshua Tree that was written in 1971, and an old map of our desert area. I stood by the side of his truck and we jawed for a spell until he had to leave for a doctor’s appointment. He told me he had a fall that broke his elbow when he was in Laughlin at a casino when he tripped on a wheelchair that was sticking out from a gambling table; the first thing that the security guards did was have him sign a release as he laid on the floor. He complained about his recent treatment at the hospital he’s been receiving and the high costs of just staying overnight in them. Last time I saw Bob, who is 91, was back in 2007 when he invited me over for a visit to his home where he keeps a very extensive model train collection.
P called to say that the Yahoo Messenger 5.5 that we installed yesterday isn’t working. I told her to try Yahoo Webmessenger that works from the browser, or else she’d have to bring her computer over to me to fix.
I tried to install an older version of Kubuntu on the Toshiba laptop but it had a bad spot on the disk and wouldn’t load Kstars, dang! I have Suse 10 Linux disks that I’ll try later on tonight; I know that has the astronomy program Kstars on it!
I went over to Stoney’s for supper to help him finish off the beans and rice dish he’d made two days ago, but we still had some leftover when we got our fill. We had a slice of apple pie with whip cream too!
When I left Stoney’s the wind had really started to blow hard, so I didn’t go on my evening walk. I read “Trojan Odyssey” instead while I installed Suse 10 on my laptop. After I got it installed I was surprised that Suse found the modem and I configured it and was able to go online over dialup! I downloaded the updates for Kstars and Firefox and was surfing the web! I can now boot up Win XP or Suse; it was worth the effort and time I put into it!
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Thursday 26 - did my stretches and lifted weights.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 45 and 66 degrees, NW winds at 6 to 10 MPH with gusts around 25, humidity around 34 percent, mostly clear skies. According to the National Weather Service “Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 72. North northwest wind around 7 mph. Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 47. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph.”
I drove the six miles down to my mailbox to collect my mail. On my way back home stopped over at Roger Toombs with a copy of XP Service Pack 3 that he needed. He gave me a DVD of some movie to watch.
My neighbor Ginger brought up a couple of her horses to her property yesterday, so I stopped over to feed then a carrot and say hi.
When I got back I went into my camper to read and did so till sunset. It was too windy for an evening walk again.
My brother Kevin called for a short chat, then Seimi called and we jawed about astronomy for an hour or so.
I spent the rest of the night reading “Trojan Odyssey” by Clive Cussler and finished the book around 12:30 am. I then did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Friday 27 - did my stretches, ran a mile and rode my bike.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 46 and 68 degrees, NW winds at 4 to 9 MPH, humidity around 30 percent, mostly clear skies turning hazy late afternoon . According to the National Weather Service “Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Calm wind becoming southeast between 4 and 7 mph. Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 50. South southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm.”
I worked on and updated the Copper Mountain Mesa Website and sent out the Newsletter.
I went outside to do some gardening and watered all the thirsty plants. Then I went on my evening walk re-listening to some astronomy lectures.
Stoney invited me over for dinner to finish off them beans and rice, but we couldn’t quite manage to do it and fed the rest that was left to the rabbits. I took a shower while I was there and I’ll be nice and clean for potluck tomorrow. As I was getting into the Gross Polluter to leave for home I saw the Moon and Venus very close to each other in the evening sky. I got out my camera and took several pictures of them. When I got home I called Seimi and had him go outside for a look-see. Very cool!
I started reading “Black Wind” by Clive Cussler and his son Dirk. I did a search and found that I still have two more Dirk Pitt novels to read!
Watched “Numb3brs” on CBS about stopping the spread of a new illegal drug before it becomes wide spread.
Did my stretches and lifted weights. Practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night.

Saturday 28 - did my stretches and ran two miles.
Today’s Weather was: Temps of around 48 and 71 degrees, light breeze, humidity around 28 percent, mostly clear skies turning hazy late evening. According to the National Weather Service “Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Calm wind becoming south southeast between 8 and 11 mph. Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. South wind 6 to 8 mph becoming west northwest.”
I went online to do some webwork, answered some emails, and posted a few replies to some articles I had read.
I called my Mom and Dad, but only yakked at Mom because Dad left for the PX to do some shopping. We chatted for over an hour about this and that. I asked her about Uncle Jack who owns a ranch in Golden Colorado. I have never met any of my uncles or aunts because I only met my Family two years ago; lots of catching up to do.
I cooked up some stuffing with chicken and headed on over to our community’s potluck. There weren’t many folks when I arrived and we were all wondering if it was going to be a small group of us, but more folks started turning up. There were almost twenty five who finally showed. The new folks Denise and Michael Myers brought some mighty delicious baked beans. Sue Bonani and her brother Tim Atzei cooked up some eggplant “Sue”preme. Diana and Bruce Rosique made rice pilaf. William Treas and his wife Elizabeth mixed up a fabulous crab salad. Danna and Karen Van Noort concocted their famed “stuffed” pears. Donna and Cal Myers brought a corn thingy. Marcie Hines who couldn’t make it left us some whipped marshmallow fruit salad and a meat and cheese plate. Chris Jonas made his fantastic macaroni salad. And Bob Seeley had his fruit platter for us all to enjoy. Marie Morrison showed up and all were glad to see her after the passing of her husband Bill, and everyone gave her a hug. Mary Hodges came too, after being absent for a few years. I got to say that we all had a mighty fine time. It’s nice to live in our little community!
When I got home I watched “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” (2008), it wasn’t that good but it was entertaining. My long time friend Bob Vandenberg called in the middle of the movie to ask about Comet Lulin, so I stopped the movie and went outside to guide him to it. Unfortunately Comet Lulin was hidden by the bright glare of the star Regulus in the constellation Leo and couldn’t be seen. Dang, and I told everyone to go look for it tonight in my Saturday’s newspaper column because it would be easy to find being near that star! Well live and learn!!!
I did my stretches, practiced my guitar, wrote to my journal, posted it to the web, and called it a night. Goodbye to February, you been quick but pleasant month.
